#SuaraKawanMuda or also known as The Youth’s Voice, held a three-days workshop titled “Literacy Savvy: Media & Environment” with 20 local participants from across Indonesia – all the way from the East to the Western part of Indonesia’s archipelago. The event took place virtually on June 5-7, 2021 with various speakers that encompassed media and digital communication experts, environmental and advocacy specialists, as well as NGO representatives.

The highlighted topics were Media and Digital Literacy (by Apni Jaya Putra), Fact-Checking (by M. Khairil), Design Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills (by Riza Primadi), Digital Storytelling (by Wahyu Mulyono), Research and Media Advocacy (by Ridzki R. Sigit), and Disaster Literacy (by Een Irawan Putra). Each session was also complemented by a 30 minutes discussion among facilitators and participants, followed by a Q&A session. This was to be our pilot project to enable the local and indigenous youth filmmakers to help empower themselves and to be better equipped with practical skills, first-hand experiences, and lastly, positive vibes.

Due to the diverse backgrounds of the participants, we applied topics that were relevant to the experiences or context of the participants’ understanding so that they can reflect on a certain issue. While having them engaged in active discussions, we determined that the participants have indeed made progress based on the outcomes of the workshop. Social networks and relationships among the alumni across the regions of Indonesia were nurtured, reinvigorating the fundamental art of thinking and decision-making to grow their impact. Ultimately, the potential of youths was consolidated towards a mutual aim.

From the online workshop and discussions, participants garnered varied insights such as rethinking their socio-historical and cultural contexts, researching action-related methodology, generating a designated framework through design thinking, and determining collective goals that were required in the first place.
